Lutein is a phytonutrient that contains antioxidants properties. It is a carotenoid but it’s not considered as – provitamin A. Lutein does not convert into Vitamin A in the body. It is one of the carotenoids which are responsible for yellow and orange pigments in fruits and vegetables. Lutein benefits are primarily for its antioxidants properties. It is very helpful in preventing macular degeneration and also in promoting overall eye health. Therefore, it is considered that lutein rich foods and lutein supplement are excellent for the eyes and vision. But, of late it is discovered that lutein is for the heart as well.

Antioxidants properties of lutein prevent free radical damage in the eyes especially on the macula. This process is found very effective in preventing atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is involving fatty deposits inside the arterial walls, which make the arteries narrow and it can lead to heart attack and stroke. Research suggests high levels of lutein in the blood lower the chance of thickness of the arteries or atherosclerosis. Lutein, like other antioxidants vitamins prevents the damage which is caused by Reactive oxygen species (ROS), thus lutein prevents oxidative damage to the cells. Oxidative damage is responsible for heart diseases and certain cancers. One of the lutein benefits is that it provides protection to the heart and helps to maintain good heart health.

Oxidization of LDL or low-density lipoprotein is very harmful for the heart. Oxidized LDL cholesterol leads to several heart diseases and antioxidants properties of lutein prevent this oxidization of LDL cholesterol. Thus, it helps to prevent and lower the heart diseases. By preventing oxidative damage of retina lutein reduce the chances of developing macular degeneration and other eye diseases and conditions. Researchers suggest high lutein amounts decreases the artery thickness significantly. Lutein is as important for the heart health as other heart medications and heart friendly vitamins or nutrients.

Smokers and regular drinkers of alcohol can gain a lot from lutein benefits. Smoking and regular alcohol consumption are the prime reason for low levels of lutein the body. Sometimes low intake of fruits and vegetables lowers the levels of lutein. The best way to get benefitted by lutein is to eat more fruits and vegetables rich in lutein. Some of the foods rich in lutein are kale, spinach, collards, green peas, turnip greens, broccoli, papaya, orange and egg yolk. But people who have high cholesterol levels should avoid eating egg yolks.
