Barley seeds are very good cholesterol lowering foods. They contain excellent amounts of dietary fiber and it is very good for the friendly bacteria or good bacteria in the large intestine. These good bacteria ferment dietary fiber of barley seeds and create two short-chain fatty acids, propionic and acetic acid. The propionic acid is heart friendly as it controls the cholesterol levels. It has cholesterol-lowering properties and it reduces the levels of cholesterol producing enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. Thus they help lower blood cholesterol levels.

In addition, barley seeds contain beta glucans which are polysaccharides (a class of carbohydrates) and very good in lowering cholesterol levels. Dietary fiber is very good to reduce the cholesterol production by the liver. According to American Heart Association, regular intake of barley seeds can lower the LDL and VLDL (large lipoproteins rich in triglyceride) cholesterol levels significantly.

Fiber content in barley removes cholesterol-containing bile and forces body to produce more bile by using more cholesterol. In this way fiber helps to lower the cholesterol levels in the blood. Regular intake of barley seeds reduces the chances of developing coronary heart disease (CHD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) significantly.

Barley is a good source of niacin or Vitamin B3. Niacin is very good for the heart as it protects from cardiovascular disease. It has the cholesterol lowering ability and reduces total cholesterol and lipoprotein (a) levels. Lipoprotein (a) or Lp (a) is a subclass of lipoprotein which is responsible for increasing risk of arteriosclerotic vascular disease or ASVD, coronary heart disease and stroke. Niacin prevents oxidization of LDL and formation of blood clots as well.

Regular breakfast with whole grain like barley can prevent heart failure and heart disease.
